Natives of Chechnya and Ingushetia are beaten in a colony in Stavropol Territory

Inmates of one of correction colonies located in the Stavropol Territory were beaten by OMON (Anti-Riot Militia) fighters. The majority of the victims were natives of Chechnya and Ingushetia. This was reported to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Aslambek Apaev, Director of the International Peacemaking Centre "Peace. Ecology. Culture".

According to the human rights defender, there are no details of what happened in the colony and no precise data on the number of victims.

"In the labour-corrective colony (LCC) No. 11, located in the city of Mikhailovsk, Stavropol Territory, militiamen accomplished a mass beating of prisoners. There are broken heads, fractured arms and legs and so on. One of the employees of the colony told me about the incident by phone," Mr Apaev asserts.

Earlier it was reported that relatives of the inmates of corrective colony No. 11, located in the Shpakovskiy District, Sravropol Territory, spoke about a revolt and hunger strike. According to the statement of the officials of the Department of the Federal Service for Enforcement of Punishments (known as UFSIN) for the region, "the colony works in the normal regime", and there are no disorders.

"On July 31, a unit of OMON fighters in masks entered the territory of LCC-11; and till yesterday they were engaged in some 'special operations' there. Many prisoners were severely beaten; most of them were natives of Chechnya and Ingushetia. At present, I'm waiting for detailed data about the victims and circumstances of the incident," said Mr Apaev.
