Storms rage in Georgia: hundreds of houses flooded, electricity supplies unstable
| Several villages of Eastern Georgia have been flooded as a result of showers incessant for several days. Floods and rains caused electricity supply problems in the area: 122,000 residents are without power, while today the high-mountainous Onsk District in Western Georgia was cut off from the outer world by a landslide, which rushed down on the 11th kilometre of the Kutaisi-Altana-Mamisoni highway. As reported by the "Imedi" TV Company, the landslide was caused by heavy showers. |

UN experts: Olympic preparations in Sochi damage environment irreparably

Experts of the United Nations have published a special report summing up the January inspection held by the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) mission and accusing Russian officials of protracting with their decision-making on mitigating negative effects of Olympic preparations on the ecology.

North-Ossetian "Rospotrebnadzor" refuses conciliating with "Electrozink"

Today, at the Arbitration Court of Vladikavkaz, the Department of "Rospotrebnadzor" (Russian Federal Agency for Consumer Supervision) in North Ossetia rejected an amicable agreement on the lawsuit with the "Electrozink" Factory. In the opinion of the Department's representatives, the terms of the agreement fail to meet the requirements for creating a due sanitary-protective zone around the enterprise.

Energy-saving programme for the capital of North Ossetia extended to five years

On February 22, Mayor of Vladikavkaz Sergey Dzantiev and officials of the Russian Power Agency discussed a programme draft for saving energy and improving the power efficiency in the capital of North Ossetia. Ecologists prepare actions in defence of Utrish in Krasnodar and Moscow

An action in defence of Utrish and Baikal will take place on February 20 in Krasnodar. A rally and a march will be already the fourth public action in defence of Utrish in Krasnodar for the last two and a half months. On that day, participation of activists of all sorts of public and political organizations, and residents of Krasnodar concerned of the situation is expected. On the same day, a rally in defence of Baikal and Utrish will take place in Moscow.

Russian ecologists suspend cooperation with "Olympstroy"
|
As reported by Igor Chestin, head of the Russian representative office of the WWF (World Wildlife Fund), Russian ecologists have suspended their cooperation with the State Corporation (SC) "Olympstroy", in charge of preparing the Sochi Olympiad-2014, because their joint decisions on protection of the regional ecosystems are not fulfilled. The "Olympstroy" treats the ecologists' demarche as a complete surprise. In the opinion of the builders, ecologists "have taken a non-constructive stand" and mislead the public.

Because of strong snowfalls and wire icing, electric power supplies are broken in the Buinaksk, Karabudakhkent and Sergokalin Districts of Dagestan. About nine thousand residents are still without electricity; they promise to restore supplies by February 15.
