Today marks four years since Natalia Estemirova's murder
Today marks exactly four years since in 2009, Natalia Estemirova, a staff member of the Grozny Office of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial", was kidnapped and murdered in Chechnya.

RWB: Ramzan Kadyrov and Vladimir Putin included in list of enemies of freedom of information
In 2013, the organization "Reporters without Borders" (RWB) included Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, in its annual list of the enemies of freedom of information. In Chechnya, the fear of the regime has become the cause of self-censorship, which "is switched on at full capacity", and, in general in Russia, attacks and attempts on journalists "are regularly repeated," the RWB reports.

UN Committee Against Torture reminds Russia of need to investigate murders of Anna Politkovskaya and Natalia Estemirova
In its report on the situation with human rights in Russia, the UN Committee Against Torture criticizes the recently adopted laws on public associations and treason, points out to the failures in the investigation into well-known cases of violence against citizens, and calls on the Russian authorities to investigate and punish the persons, responsible for the murder of Anna Politkovskaya, the observer of the newspaper "Novaya Gazeta" and human rights defender Natalia Estemirova.

Sergey Sokolov: investigators have enough information to reveal real customers of Anna Politkovskaya's murder
On October 7, a picket took place in the Novopushkinsky Park of Moscow in memory of journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who shot dead in 2006 at entrance to her house. The picket was attended by about 100 persons. Since no loudspeakers are allowed at pickets, the protesters mainly spoke to each other.

PACE expresses concern over pressure on human rights defenders in Russia and Southern Caucasus
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) urged its member states to enhance attention to the protection of human rights defenders. Among the countries where human rights defenders are under pressure, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia were mentioned. The section, devoted to Russia, pays special attention to the situation in Northern Caucasus.

ECtHR orders Russia to pay 300,000 euros to Chechen resident
Today, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) pronounced the decision to collect from Russia 300,000 euros in favour of Imar-Ali Damaev, a resident of Chechnya, whose wife and five children were killed in an air attack of federal aviation in 2004.

Amnesty International: Northern Caucasus fails to meet basic laws
On May 23, in Moscow, representatives of the worldwide movement for human rights "Amnesty International" (AI) presented the report "Human Rights in Modern World", containing information about the situation with human rights in 2011 in 155 countries. The Russian version of the report provides information on 50 countries. The Russian part is largely devoted to the republics of Northern Caucasus, where the human rights defenders characterize the situation as unstable and uneven.
